Back to the Past
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
Who says you can’t go back in time?
Just walk into one of the many Pizza Huts with the red checkered table cloths, Tiffany-inspired lamps, and red cups to boot. Oh, and you can even play Pac-Man! It’s all in an effort to turn back the clock to simpler times.
But why?
The article I’m referencing (see below) put it this way: “2026 has proven to be the year of nostalgia. Youngsters are resorting to old-school tech like vintage flip phones and iPods. Others are returning to analog hobbies and activities.”
I’m into retro. I even drive a car from the 90’s. For whatever reason, it seems times were simpler back then. But as one wit put it, “The good old days are a combination of a bad memory and a good imagination!”
The reality is this: we cannot go back in time. It’s fun to imaginarily revisit them for a while, but once we step outside, we’re right back in 2026.
This reminds me of what Paul wrote to the Philippians. He said, in essence, I’m not focused on the past, I’m pressing toward the future! I’m keeping my eyes on Christ.
Recently, I found some notes from a church I visited in Florida where I wrote this:
3 Rules for Spiritual Progress: You cannot go back, You cannot stay where you are, You must go forward.
That’s a good word!
So go ahead and eat your pizza like you’re in the 80’s, but live today.
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for the good memories of good times from yesteryear. But help me to live for You today, right where I am. And please help me to point others to You. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
