I think our culture has become excessive, and technology is much to blame. Why watch one video when you can watch 100? We keep scrolling and scrolling, and the algorithms just keep churning out content that we are interested in.
We have a hard time saying “enough.”
Esau sounds quite different than many in our world. When Jacob was trying to cushion himself against what he thought Esau was going to do, he sent an abundance of gifts. (Genesis 32:13-21)
Esau replied, “I have enough, keep it.” Interestingly, Jacob said the same thing shortly after: Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it. Genesis 33:11
When is enough, enough?!
Where does contentment come into play?
It would be wise to prayerfully consider this question and draw the lines of “enough” in our own lives. And don’t just think of money and possessions. We need to consider our schedules, commitments, and activities, because we all need to know when we have “enough.”
Dear Heavenly Father, You are so good to us, and bless us so much. Thank You. But we are greedy at times, wanting more and more. Forgive us. Help us to remember that Jesus said to ask for “daily bread,” not enough for a month or two. Help us to recognize that You are our Provider, and that You are enough. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
