Upsizing
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Colossians 3:2
The following quote appeared in a Wall Street Journal article on the Boomer generation: “We’ll downsize when they plant me 6 feet into the ground.” This was said by 64 year old Victor.
The article went on to explain that “Well-off boomers are increasingly upsizing their homes as they age, either buying bigger ones or financing additions to their existing properties. They are building guesthouses for family members and gourmet kitchens for entertaining, alongside such features as high-end grab bars and first-floor primary bedrooms for aging in place.”
While it’s none of my business how big a house someone has, this article did get me thinking about the outlook of many people. At a time when one is in their later years, instead of focusing on leaving, they are settling in even more. Sadly, Victor seems to think that it all ends with the grave.
The Bible is clear that this current life is temporary. It’s my belief that as we mature in Christ our focus should move more and more on eternity. Not on “our house,” but on the Father’s house (John 14:2). While there’s nothing wrong with having things, we must guard against things having us!
Dear Father in Heaven, we are surrounded by so many attractive items in life: houses, lands, cars, and so much more. Help us to keep our focus on You. We thank You for all the good things that You have given to us, and for those things that in Your wisdom You have withheld from us. May our affection be set on You. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
