What Are You Looking At?
I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. Psalm 101:3
I recently read that “About 3,500 years ago, Egyptians treated night blindness by squeezing the juice of roasted ox liver, which is rich in vitamin A, into their eyes, a practice documented in their medical scroll, ‘Ebers Papyrus.’
Strange as it sounds, the Egyptians were onto something that modern science has only discovered in the last century: Food is medicine for vision.”*
When it comes to our eyes, what we see is even more important than what we eat!
The Psalmist made up his mind not to intentionally look at any wicked thing. While that was much needed in his day, how much more is it needed in ours?! We are constantly bombarded by visual stimuli. Millions are spent to get us to look for just a second, with the hope that we will keep looking.
Purity still matters. We need to give careful consideration to what we watch and listen to. And when we’re not sure, the old adage is most helpful—“When in doubt, don’t!”
Father, please help me guard my vision today. My eyes are a gift from You, so help me use them in a way that honors You. Forgive me for the times I’ve failed in this. Please give me a heart that loves what is pure. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
