Where's Your Treasure?
Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Matthew 6:19-21 NLT
Fifty years ago, Harold Davisson had an idea to create a time capsule to remember life in 1975. Last week it was finally opened. Inside the capsule were found pet rocks, artwork, a leisure suit, letters, and even a Chevy Vega!
Davisson's daughter said that her father did well. “A lot of the other packages that were wrapped in plastic have come out very, very well, but we have a layer of mold-type items on the outside of all the paper and cardboard. But again, I would say about 80% of the people are going to be able to get their items back, and 20% are going to be disappointed.”
While time capsules are fascinating, this story reminded me of a biblical truth: Store your real treasure in heaven. There, you don't have to worry about mold, rust, moths, or thieves! You don't have to wonder if your treasure is going to survive. You can rest easy knowing that what really matters is really secure.
And never forget, our greatest treasure is Jesus Himself!
Dear Father in Heaven, Please help me to value what You value and to spend my life not on accumulating riches here on earth, but rather by laying up treasure in heaven. Help me to always remember that Jesus is the greatest treasure. In His Precious Name, I pray. Amen.
